Common questions

When did Alberta start requiring radon rough-ins?

Alberta adopted the radon rough-in requirement through the Alberta Building Code 2014, which came into effect on November 1, 2015. Homes permitted before that date were not subject to the requirement.

Does this apply to all new Alberta homes?

Yes. The requirement covers new residential construction province-wide under Part 6 of the Alberta Building Code 2014. There are no county-level exemptions under the provincial code.

Is a powered fan required at construction?

No. Alberta requires a passive rough-in pipe at the time of construction. A powered fan is a post-occupancy addition if radon testing results show elevated levels after the home is occupied.

What does the plans examiner look for?

Plan reviewers check that the rough-in pipe is shown on foundation plans and that its routing and exterior termination point are specified. A permit set without these details may be flagged for revision before approval.
